Current Exhibit: Current Exhibit: The Palouse: Serene, Sublime, Surreal - by Tom Kretsch
The Palouse is one of the largest wheat and legume producing areas in America. The undulating hills have been shaped by years of wind erosion, creating these hills of loess, sediment of dust and calcitrate that over the years has compacted and created a very fertile bed for growing. The word Palouse comes from the Native Americans, The Palos, who lived in these parts and later the French word, pelouse, meaning long and short grass.
The Palouse is truly a magnificent place filled with color, texture and shape. As light and shadow move across the hills the eyes take one on a magical journey which at times feels like one is looking at an abstract painting. The landscape is filled with colors that weave together an almost surreal world that takes your breath away. From a Butte overlooking the area, the perspective takes you into some truly remarkable places of wonder. Dotted between the wonderous landscape are beautiful barns and structures that when viewed from a distance bring that human touch to the landscape.
